What the law actually says
The Arms Act 1959 is the central firearms law. Under the Arms Rules 2016, only air weapons above 20 joules and/or with a bore larger than .177 inch need a licence. So an air pistol or air rifle of .177 calibre with muzzle energy under 20 joules is outside licensing — but it must still be sold by a licensed air-weapon dealer who records the buyer’s identity and residence proof.
