Is Air Gun Legal in Kerala?
Plain-English answers on air pistol / air rifle rules in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Thrissur and every district of Kerala — what the law says, how to buy, and how to carry and practise safely.

Direct Answer
Yes — air guns are legal in Kerala without a licence. Under central law (Arms Rules 2016) an airgun of .177 calibre and under 20 joules needs no arms licence anywhere in India, including Kerala — but it must be sold by a licensed air-weapon dealer who takes your photo ID and address proof. Kerala has no additional state rule on top of this. Practical answer: buy from a licensed seller, keep the GST invoice, and carry and shoot responsibly.
What the law says in Kerala
Every airgun in India is governed by the same central law: the Arms Act 1959 and the Arms Rules 2016. Only air weapons above 20 joules and/or with a bore larger than .177 inch need a licence, so a .177 air pistol or air rifle under 20 joules needs no arms licence — but it must be sold by a licensed air-weapon dealer who records the buyer’s identity and residence proof. That rule applies uniformly across the country, Kerala included. Source: MHA — FAQs on the Arms Rules 2016.
Kerala has not issued any state law or notification that adds a licence or registration requirement for airguns on top of the central rule. Kochi City Police, Thiruvananthapuram City Police and the district police across Kerala apply the same Arms Act and Arms Rules as the rest of India.
The practical path for a Kerala buyer
Four steps that keep ownership straightforward:
Step 1 — Buy from a legitimate manufacturer with a GST invoice
Buy from an Indian manufacturer that ships with a full GST invoice listing model name and muzzle energy. Never buy an unbranded or gray-market airgun for Kerala delivery — the paper trail is your primary protection.
Step 2 — Keep the invoice + Arms Rules printout at home
A printed copy of the GST invoice and a printout of the MHA FAQ on the Arms Rules 2016 (also summarised on our air gun laws page) should stay with the airgun. If a police officer visits, these two documents resolve most queries within minutes.
Step 3 — Carry and practise responsibly
Transport the airgun in a closed, opaque case and never carry it visibly in public. Shoot only on private property with a safe backstop, never at birds or animals (protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972), and never point it at a person — that is criminal intimidation under BNS Sections 351–352 whatever the gun.
Step 4 — If police ask you to surrender the airgun, ask for a written seizure order
You are within your rights to refuse informal “we’ll keep it for safekeeping” surrender. If a Kerala officer insists on taking the airgun, ask for a written seizure order under Section 165 CrPC (now BNSS). A legal airgun cannot be seized without proper documentation. Consult a local advocate if the situation escalates — a .177 airgun under 20 joules bought from a licensed dealer is legal under central law.

- Amazon / Flipkart / OLX listings under ₹5,000 — gray-market imports without GST invoice.

- Airsoft, gel-blaster, or paintball guns — separate category, different legality.
- Anything over 20 J muzzle energy or larger than .177 calibre — that needs an arms licence.

Frequently asked questions
Is an air gun legal in Kerala without a licence?
The central law says yes — under the Arms Rules 2016 (as explained in the MHA FAQ), an air gun of .177 calibre (4.5 mm) AND under 20 joules needs no arms licence anywhere in India; it must be sold by a licensed air-weapon dealer who takes your ID and address proof, to adults only. Kerala has no state law or notification that adds a registration or licence requirement on top of this, so the same rule applies in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode and every other district.
Do I have to register my air pistol with Kerala Police?
No. There is no Kerala state law or Arms Act provision that requires you to register a .177 airgun under 20 joules with the police. The licensed dealer who sells it records your photo ID and address proof at the time of sale, which is the paper trail the Arms Rules 2016 require. Keep the GST invoice with the airgun. If a police officer ever asks about it, show the invoice and a printout of the MHA FAQ on the Arms Rules 2016, and do not hand the airgun over without a written seizure memo.
Can I buy an air pistol online for delivery to Kochi / Thiruvananthapuram / Kozhikode?
Yes. Pan-India courier delivery of a sub-20J airgun to any Kerala pincode is legal. Camstar Sports delivers to Kochi (Ernakulam), Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Thrissur, Kollam, Kannur, Kottayam, Palakkad, Malappuram, Alappuzha within 7–9 days* via Delhivery / DTDC. The courier company will not ask for any special paperwork. On arrival, keep the GST invoice safe — if a police officer ever asks about the airgun, the invoice plus a printout of the MHA FAQ on the Arms Rules 2016 answers the question.
What should a Kerala buyer do practically to avoid police hassle?
Keep it simple: (1) buy from a licensed seller who issues a proper GST invoice listing the model, calibre and muzzle energy, and who takes your ID and address proof; (2) keep the invoice and a printed copy of the MHA FAQ on the Arms Rules 2016 with the airgun; (3) transport it in a closed case and never carry it visibly in public; (4) shoot only on private property with a safe backstop; (5) if questioned, show the documents calmly, and do not hand the airgun over without a written seizure memo.
Can I get an airgun licence in Kerala if I want to be extra safe?
You do not need one for a .177 air gun under 20 joules. Under the Arms Rules 2016, only air weapons above 20 J or with a bore larger than .177 need a licence — so a licence is neither required nor issued for a legal .177 sub-20 J air pistol. What gives you peace of mind is the paperwork the law already asks for: the dealer's record of your ID and address proof, and a GST invoice that names the model, calibre and muzzle energy.
