PCP Air Rifle in India 2026
The Complete Guide
Pre-Charged Pneumatic rifles are the gold standard for accuracy and consistency. Used by Olympic athletes and national champions worldwide. This guide explains everything — how they work, how to fill them, what to buy, and how to get competition-ready.

A Pre-Charged Pneumatic (PCP) air rifle stores compressed air in a built-in reservoir (typically at 150–200 bar / 2,200–2,900 PSI). When you pull the trigger, a small, precisely controlled burst of air is released to propel the pellet. Because the release mechanism is mechanical and repeatable, every shot delivers the exact same power — resulting in consistent velocity and accuracy.
This is fundamentally different from spring guns (where a spring's energy varies with temperature and use) and CO₂ guns (where pressure drops as the cartridge empties). PCP eliminates those variables. That's why every Olympic 10m air rifle competitor in the world shoots a PCP.
Pinpoint Accuracy
Same pressure, same trajectory, every single shot.
30–60 Shot Count
One fill lasts an entire training session.
Near Silent
Extremely quiet — safe for indoor and backyard use.
No Licence
Under 20J muzzle energy. Fully legal in India.
How Does a PCP Air Rifle Work?
The mechanism is elegantly simple once you understand it:
Fill the Reservoir
Connect a high-pressure hand pump or scuba cylinder to the rifle's fill port using a quick-connect hose. Fill to the manufacturer's specified pressure (usually 150–200 bar). This takes about 5–10 minutes with a hand pump.
Load a Pellet
PCP rifles come in single-shot (manually loaded) or magazine-fed variants. Single-shot is more common for competition. Drop a .177 pellet into the loading port, skirt first, and close the bolt.
Cock the Action
Pull back the side-lever or bolt to open the valve and prepare the firing mechanism. This is a smooth, low-effort action on a well-tuned PCP.
Aim and Fire
The trigger releases the hammer, which strikes the air valve for a precisely metered burst of air. The pellet exits at consistent velocity — typically 550–650 FPS in .177 for a match rifle.
Monitor Pressure
A built-in pressure gauge shows remaining air. As pressure drops below the optimal band, shots become less consistent — this is your cue to refill. Most PCP rifles show this clearly.
How to Fill a PCP Rifle in India
You have two practical options, and both are easy to arrange in India:
Option 1: High-Pressure Hand Pump
A quality hand pump (available for ₹4,000–10,000) can fill most PCP rifles to 200 bar in about 200–300 pump strokes. Takes roughly 8–12 minutes. Completely independent — fill anywhere, anytime, no electricity or tank needed.
Best for: Home shooters, those without access to a dive shop, anyone who wants to be self-sufficient.

Option 2: Scuba / Dive Cylinder
A 12L scuba cylinder at 200–230 bar can fill 15–20 PCP rifles in seconds per fill. Cylinders cost ₹6,000–15,000 and can be refilled at any dive shop or shooting range in India for ₹200–500 per fill.
Best for: Serious shooters who train daily, clubs, coaches managing multiple students.
Dive shops in major Indian cities offer cylinder refills. Check local shooting clubs as well.
⚠️ Important:
Never overfill a PCP rifle beyond its rated maximum pressure. This can damage O-rings, seals, and the regulator. Always check your rifle's manual for the correct fill pressure and never exceed it.
PCP Rifles for Competition Shooting in India
India's shooting sports infrastructure has grown massively. Every state now has air rifle events in its school, district, and state games calendar. Here's what you need to know about competing with a PCP rifle:
ISSF 10m Air Rifle Event
The standard competition format. Shooters fire 60 shots at a 10-ring target from 10 metres. A PCP rifle in .177 is mandatory. Camstar's competition rifles are built to ISSF weight and dimension specifications.
School & College Competitions
Most school-level competitions allow standard PCP rifles without modification. If you're a student, a Camstar entry-level PCP is the ideal starting point — competition-ready without breaking the budget.
State & National Games
At state and national levels, equipment specifications are stricter. Weight of the rifle, trigger weight, and barrel length are regulated. Camstar's competition series models are built specifically for these requirements.
Training at Home
The best competitive shooters train 300–500 shots daily. A PCP rifle, a quality target, and a pellet trap is all you need to set up a 10m range at home. Many national-level shooters in India train this way.

PCP Air Rifle FAQ
Do I need a licence for a PCP air rifle in India?
No. PCP air rifles with muzzle energy under 20 joules are exempt from the Indian Arms Act. Camstar's PCP rifles are designed within this legal limit. No licence, registration, or police NOC is required.
What pressure should I fill a PCP air rifle to?
Most PCP rifles are filled to 150–200 bar (2,200–2,900 PSI). Always check your specific rifle's manual — the correct fill pressure is usually marked on the gauge or in the documentation. Overfilling can damage seals.
How many shots can I get from one fill?
Typically 30–60 shots per fill for a .177 PCP rifle. The exact number depends on the rifle's reservoir size, regulator setting, and pellet weight. Camstar rifles are optimised to give you the maximum shot count within the accuracy band.
Can I use a PCP rifle for national-level competition?
Yes. Camstar's competition PCP rifles are built to ISSF 10m air rifle specifications. Many state-level and national-level shooters in India use Camstar PCP rifles. Check specific event rules for equipment approval.
How often do I need to service a PCP rifle?
A well-maintained PCP rifle needs minimal servicing. Replace O-rings every 1–2 years or if you notice air leaks. Clean the barrel every 500–1,000 shots. Camstar offers full service and parts availability across India.
What pellets should I use in a PCP air rifle?
Use quality .177 (4.5mm) flat-head or dome-head pellets for target shooting. H&N Finale Match, RWS R10, and JSB Match are popular competition choices. Avoid cheap pellets — inconsistent weight and dimensions will hurt your groupings.
